Back to Nature Cotton Burr Compost is truly nature’s perfect soil conditioner. When properly composted, cotton burrs are an excellent food source for the beneficial soil organisms that help to make nutrients available to plants, aerate the soil, neutralize soil pH, and help to keep harmful organisms and diseases in check. Cotton Burr Compost has excellent moisture-retention characteristics and is prized for its ability to break up tight clay soils.

Mushroom compost, or spent mushroom substrate (SMS), is a nutrient-rich, dark organic material left over from mushroom cultivation, typically made from sterilized materials like straw, horse/chicken manure, and gypsum. It acts as a beneficial soil conditioner that improves soil structure, aids in moisture retention, and boosts plant growth. American Mushroom Institute +2

Benefits of Mushroom Compost: Improves Soil Structure: It breaks up heavy clay soils and adds organic matter, which enhances water retention.

Soil Ammenments:

Lava Sand

Lava sand, or lava in any size, increases the water holding capacity of the soil and increases the paramagnetism. The result is increased production of any plant crop.

Here are some of the ways to use lava sand for greater plant production.

Sick trees – broadcast under the trees at 40-80 pounds/1,000 square feet. For more effective results on sicker trees, drill 2” holes 12-18” deep throughout the root zone and fill with 50% lava sand and 50% compost.

Roses – add to rose bed preparation at 80 pounds per 1,000 square feet and to the top of roses in pots at a rate heavy enough to cover the soil surface red. Gently work into the top 1”. Turf broadcast at 40 pounds per 1,000 square feet.

Bed preparation – till together with compost and organic fertilizer. Use 40 – 80 pounds per 1,000 square feet.

Potting soil – add up to 1/3 the volume of good potting soil. Lava sand – magic? No, it just helps the physics, chemistry and biology of the soil.

Texas Green Sand

Greensand or Glauconite, is a marine sediment that naturally contains iron, potash and various silicates. Long lasting and free flowing, this mined product is helpful in a variety of situations.

It will help loosen hard soil or bind coarse soils. Greensand is an excellent source of potassium and numerous trace minerals, and because of its sandy composition, Greensand can also help to improve your soils drainage.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown of greensand’s uses:

Soil Amendment and Fertilizer:

Nutrient Source:

Greensand is a good source of potassium (K), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), and various micronutrients, which are essential for plant health.

Soil Structure Improvement:

It helps loosen clay soils, binds sandy soils, and improves overall soil structure, aeration, and drainage.

Water Retention:

Greensand enhances water-holding capacity in both sandy and clay soils, reducing the need for frequent watering.

Slow-Release Fertilizer:

It acts as a slow-release fertilizer, gradually providing nutrients to plants over time.

Application:

Greensand can be applied as a soil amendment when planting, or as a top dressing for established plants.

Water Treatment:

Water Softening Greensand, specifically glauconite, is used as a water softener due to its chemical-exchange properties.

Iron and Manganese Removal:

Manganese greensand (greensand coated with manganese oxide) is used in well water treatment systems to remove dissolved iron and manganese.

Expanded Shale

Expanded shale, a lightweight, porous material created by heating shale, is primarily used as a soil amendment to improve drainage, aeration, and moisture retention, particularly in heavy clay soils. It also finds applications in hydroponics, construction, and as a decorative ground cover.

Here’s a more detailed look at its uses:

Gardening & Soil Improvement:

Soil Amendment: Expanded shale helps break up compacted clay soil, improving drainage and aeration, which are crucial for healthy plant root systems.

Moisture Retention: Its porous structure allows it to absorb and slowly release water, which can be beneficial during dry periods.

Hydroponics: The porous nature of expanded shale makes it suitable for hydroponic systems, providing a good medium for roots to grow and beneficial bacteria to thrive.

Decorative Ground Cover: It can be used as a decorative ground cover in gardens and pathways.

Turf & Athletic Fields: Expanded shale is used as a soil amendment for turf, including lawns, athletic fields, and horse tracks.

Mud Block: It can be used as a mud blocker in areas like horse stalls, pens, walkways, and running tracks.

Planting Mix: Expanded shale can be mixed into potting mixes to improve drainage and aeration.

Pest Barrier: The gravelly texture can act as a barrier to voles and moles.

Soil Lightening: It can be used to lighten heavy clay soil.

Construction & Other Applications:

Lightweight Aggregate:

Expanded shale is used as a lightweight aggregate in concrete, reducing the overall weight of structures.

Rooftop Gardens & Green Roofs:

Its lightweight nature makes it suitable for supporting plant life in rooftop gardens and green roofs.

Backfill & Drainage:

It can be used as a backfill and drainage material in various construction projects.

Filter Material:

Expanded shale can be used as a filter material in water gardens and retention ponds.

Vermiculite

Vermiculite helps to aerate soil while simultaneously retaining water and nutrients, which it then releases over time. Vermiculite is therefore useful in seed sowing and propagation

Vermiculite is an efficient and popular soil conditioner

Loosens soil, provides aeration, retains water

Can be used to start seeds, propagate cuttings and store bulbs

Blend with peat moss and perlite for a custom soilless mix

Vermiculite:

Function:

Known for its excellent water and nutrient retention, acting like a sponge to hold moisture and slowly release it to plants.

Appearance:

Expanded mica, appearing as flat, flaky granules.

Water Retention:

Holds a significant amount of water, making it suitable for plants that require consistent moisture.

Ideal for:

Plants that need moist soil conditions, such as seedlings, cuttings, and plants in containers or hanging baskets

Pearlite

Function: Primarily used to improve aeration and drainage in soil, preventing compaction and allowing roots to breathe.

Appearance: Expanded volcanic glass, appearing as small, white, porous spheres.

Water Retention: Doesn’t retain much water, allowing it to drain quickly.

Ideal for: Plants that prefer well-drained soil, such as succulents, cacti, and other drought-tolerant species

Molasses

Molasses is a, natural, organic lawn amendment that acts as a potent carbohydrate food source for beneficial soil microbes, boosting their activity to improve nutrient uptake, soil structure, and grass color. Commonly applied as a liquid or dry product, it helps strengthen roots, increase microbial life, and reduce thatch.

Benefits and Uses in Lawn Care

Microbial Fuel: It provides quick energy (carbon and sugar) to stimulate bacteria and fungi, making fertilizers more effective.

Improved Color & Vigor: It can promote a deep green color, especially when paired with iron or manganese, without forcing excessive, weak, top-level growth.
